Alice has been teaching the Baby Class (nursery) at the Living Positive Kenya Daycare Center since 2011. Alice is a single mother living in the slum of Mathare with her four children, Mary (14), Paul (11), Vincent (5), and Venus (5 months). Despite the daily struggle to provide for her four children by herself, Alice takes care of more than 20 babies at the daycare center with the few resources available to her. "The difficulties for me are the supplies for the baby's. If their parents do not send them with milk or mandazi (snacks) they become very hungry and sad. The same thing happens with the diapers. If the parents do not send them with diapers than the child will spoil their pants and they do not have clothes to change." |
Alice's idea of a perfect Christmas would be:
"My perfect Christmas would be to eat chapati and chicken and give my children new clothes and shoes, and toys. Also to give them better, more healthy foods. Also pampers and foods for the baby. Having any extra money will help when the kids get sick because I usually cannot afford medicine." Her wish-list
