Project Summary

In 2012, as the culmination LEI's first project, we constructed a new pre-primary school building with two classrooms, a kitchen, dining room, playground, and three new sanitary toilets for the small community of Longonot. The new school replaced the existing building that was little more than a shack--serving 40 children. We also support a daily lunch program to ensure the children receive adequate nutrition—healthy students are more successful students. We are now working to construct a large rainwater collection system that will not only sustain the school but will benefit the entire community.

About the School

Working with the community in Longonot, we rebuilt the pre-primary school in the area. The school's previous building was wholly inadequate--insecure, unsafe, cramped, leaky, etc. The building restricted the teachers' ability to keep supplies and adequate desks and chairs as break-ins were a common occurrence. Overall, it was not a good learning environment for the children despite the teachers' best efforts.

The new school provides a permanent, secure structure with sufficient space for a growing number of students and teachers. The school contains two large classrooms, a kitchen, and a dining area/bonus room  for the children. Three new toilets were also constructed to replace the existing, unsanitary two. We continue to maintain the daily lunch program and are creating a new program that allows parents to volunteer for the school (cooking, gardening, etc.) in substitute of paying the moderate school fees when necessary. Currently approximately 30 children attend the school. Now, pre-primary school enrollment in the community has increased, and the children are receiving higher quality education.
