Salama School

Project Summary

Formerly know as the Living Positive Kenya Daycare Center, Salama School is a daycare center and school for more than 90 children aged five and under. The center primarily serves the slum community of Ngong—a town just outside Nairobi. We are currently working towards constructing a second cement classroom for the children! In 2013 we teamed with Living Positive Kenya, a Kenyan NGO that works with HIV-positive women in Ngong, to construct a new classroom and four new toilets to improve the problem of overcrowding and poor sanitation for the children at the center. We have since constructed a second and third classroom!

About the School

Living Positive Kenya is a Kenyan NGO that seeks to improve the physical and psychological health and to develop the socioeconomic status of women who are HIV positive. LPK's mission is to alleviate the suffering of those affected by HIV/AIDS, by providing them with health care, education, income generating programs, and rehabilitation.

LPK started a daycare center to assist the children of the women in the organization's  programs, which currently hosts over 80 children between one and five years of age. The LPK Daycare Center faced many challenges—chief among them being overcrowding and poor sanitation. To overcome these problems, new classrooms--to reduce the congestion-- and four new toilets and a water tank—improving sanitary conditions—were required.

Our Involvement

We partnered with Living Positive Kenya in 2013 to accomplish the LPK Daycare Center project improvements, enabling completion before the end of the year! The daycare is much better able to support the needs of the children it serves, and we continue to work with LPK—a great organization with a mission and goals for the children in close alignment with our own.

In 2015 we met our fundraising goal of $4,500 to build another classroom for the Daycare Center, which was completed in early 2016.

On January 27th 2017, together with LPK we once again met our fundraising goal of $4,500 to construct a third permanent classroom, it was finished in November of 2017!

In 2019 and 2020 we contributed towards the construction of a new kitchen and dining hall for the students.

In 2022 we hope to help the school grow in any way that we can!
