Construction Day 8!

2/9/2012

Here are a few pictures from the eighth day of construction:

Completed section of the wall.
The existing two gates; the cement will be demolished and the second gate will be sold.
Where the new gate will be.

As you can see, we are increasing the size of the compound by constructing the wall along the edges of the plot of land. The original plot was divided into two homes with two gates, divided by a barbed wire fence between the two. The section of land just outside of the compound was used for vehicle access. Now that it is just Mama Mora and her family living within the duplex, we have taken down the barbed wire fence, are removing one of the two existing gates, and moving the remaining gate to its new location. With the newly acquired land we will increase the size of the garden, improving the home's sustainability effort. The primary school directly next to Faraja is also extremely grateful for the construction of this wall as they have been meaning to get rid of the barbed wire fence and permanently close the existing access way; many children attempt to cross as a shortcut while injuring themselves on the barbed wire in the process.

Tomorrow we will paint the gate, begin adding barbed wire along the top of the wall, and start cleaning up inside the compound!

Amazing progress in such a short amount of time, and it looks like it's coming along great! Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

I'd like to second the suggestion to go with razor wire if there is any available and you haven't already made your purchase.

Thank you for these updates!

Thanks for the photos of the nice wall. Is Omari supervising construction?

Yes! He is the "boss of the boss", or "bossman" as I refer to him these days; supervising and overseeing every last detail of the project. I'm telling you, if he sees one person standing idle, he is the first to give them something to do.

His internship was postponed to allow him to recover and monitor this project, and will resume work on Tuesday (February 14th). By then, the wall will be completely finished!

On construction day 1, you wrote, "If the wall is not finished in a week, they have agreed will pay them less." Any estimate on how much will be saved now that construction is definitely over 1 week?

It's surreal how just a little can go a long way. I love all the progress photos, I can't wait to see it when it's almost done and completed. Stay safe!
